SUMMARY:Understanding Operator Stress in Pipeline Control Rooms Field Obse
 rvations and Ergonomic Implications
DESCRIPTION:Jangwoon Park (University of South Carolina)\n\nPipeline contr
ol room operators face compounding stressors from rotating shift schedules
, dense alarm-driven interfaces, cognitive-intensive shift handovers, and
sociotechnical communication gaps. This paper presents field observations
conducted during a two-day site visit to an active natural gas and liquid
pipeline control room. Through direct operator shadowing and informal inte
rviews, we identified multidimensional, cyclically patterned stress source
s rooted in circadian disruption, hypervigilance, transition-period cognit
ive load, and communication-induced ambiguity. Environmental design elemen
ts partially modulated these demands. Findings directly inform a Digital T
win Control Room Simulator under development, embedding empirically observ
ed stressors to support human-centered interface design validation and ope
 rator resilience research.\n\n
