SUMMARY:From Signals to Meaning: Rethinking Vibrotactile Warning Design Th
 rough User Interpretation
DESCRIPTION:Xiang Yang, Maury A. Nussbaum, and Nazila Roofigari-Esfahan (V
irginia Tech University)\n\nFrom smartwatches to car steering wheels, vibr
ation alerts now guide us through everyday tasks (e.g., warning drivers of
hazards, nudging pedestrians, or signaling workers in noisy environments)
. Yet these "vibrotactile" warnings produce surprisingly inconsistent resu
lts: the same buzz that helps one person react quickly can confuse or anno
y another.\nThis paper argues that the missing piece is interpretation. Mo
st warning systems are designed around physical properties, where a vibrat
ion is felt, how fast it pulses, how strong it is. Designers assume users
will understand the signal in the same way. In reality, what a vibration m
eans depends on a person's mental models, prior experience, and immediate
context.\nWe propose an Alignment-Based Model of Vibrotactile Interpretati
on that treats user interpretation as a central link between signal design
and behavior. The model shows that warnings succeed when the user's intui
tive reading of a signal matches what the system intends and fail when tho
se meanings diverge. Designing for alignment, not just detection, offers a
path toward safer, more human-centered warning systems.\n\n
