SUMMARY:Metrics of Vigilance Decrement
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Baker (Oregon State University)\n\nAlthough the vigilanc
e decrement has been a central topic in human factors since the start of t
he field, there is no agreed-upon measurement of vigilance performance app
ropriate for theory testing. We audited the literature to examine the rela
tive frequency of several indexes of detection performance in vigilance mo
nitoring tasks. We restricted inclusion to peer-reviewed reports of primar
y vigilance data from human participants at signal rate < .25, and reporti
ng changes over time to at least one measure of detection performance. Eac
h article was assigned to two independent coders, with conflicts resolved
by a senior researcher. Approx. 75% of articles reported signal detection
measures of sensitivity, with d’ and A’ accounting for close to 85% of the
se reports. Only 60% reported both sensitivity and bias, and only 50% of s
ensitivity analyses also reported raw detection rates. The literature appe
ars skewed towards reports of sensitivity. Critically, reports typically f
ail to include the minimum information necessary to assess construct valid
ity of these measures. Findings suggest a need reexamine the quality of ev
idence for sensitivity decrements, and to develop standardized guidelines
 for vigilance measurement.\n\n
