SUMMARY:Anthropomorphism and Artificial Intelligence: Common Themes and Co
 ntradictions
DESCRIPTION:Caroline Deck, Aarohi Srivastava, and Ulker Yusupova (Embry-Ri
ddle Aeronautical University) and Briana Sobel (Embry Riddle Aeronautical
University)\n\nArtificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly advancing technol
ogy often described as mimicking human cognition. Despite its benefits, AI
raises concerns, including persistent bias, increasing incidents, and wid
espread public skepticism about its overall impact. As AI becomes more int
egrated into daily life, understanding human-AI interaction is critical, p
articularly whether perceiving AI as humanlike helps or hinders these inte
ractions. Anthropomorphism refers to attributing human characteristics, in
tentions, or emotions to nonhuman entities. Some researchers argue that a
nthropomorphizing AI fosters empathy, trust, and usability, improving inte
ractions. Others contend it is misleading, causing users to overestimate A
I’s capabilities and misunderstand its limitations. This study conducts a
semi-structured literature review of 95 articles from major academic datab
ases, categorizing them as viewing anthropomorphism as beneficial or detri
mental. Preliminary findings show mixed results: anthropomorphism may incr
ease trust and likability in some contexts but has inconsistent effects on
performance and attitudes. Overall, the research highlights conflicting e
vidence and emphasizes the need for a clearer theoretical framework. Under
standing anthropomorphism’s role is essential for designing effective and
responsible AI systems as their societal influence grows.\n\n
