SUMMARY:Detection of Road Hazards in Brief Dynamic Scenes by Novice and Ex
 perienced Drivers
DESCRIPTION:Cary Feria, Gregory Costedoat, Leona Hoshino, Sean Pradhan, an
 d Saul Statman (San Jose State University)\n\nWhen a driver encounters a h
azard on the road, they must react to it quickly, to avoid a collision. H
owever, less-experienced drivers may have more limited ability to react to
road hazards. This study examines differences between novice and experie
nced drivers in rapid detection of hazards in very brief dynamic road scen
es. Students viewed videos of 1000ms duration, selected from the Road Haz
ard Stimulus Set, and quickly pressed a key indicating whether they saw a
hazard. NASA Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) was used to measure sustain
ed attention. The experienced group had their driver’s license at least o
ne year, while the novice group had their license less than one year. Res
ults indicated that experienced drivers had higher percent correct and hig
her sensitivity of hazard detection than novice drivers. Hazard detection
reaction time was negatively correlated with length of driving experience
. Experienced drivers also had fewer lapses on the NASA PVT than novices.
Findings suggest that more experienced drivers have greater accuracy and
sensitivity of hazard detection, and greater sustained attention, as comp
ared to novices. Results highlight that drivers with less than one year s
ince licensure may not yet have fully developed their ability to rapidly d
etect road hazards in dynamic scenes.\n\n
