SUMMARY:Building a Journal Set to Define Human Factors Engineering for Evi
 dence Synthesis
DESCRIPTION:Yuqi He, Delaney Ubellacker, Yue Luo, Jingyi Xie, and Gaojian
Huang (San Jose State University)\n\nHuman Factors Engineering (HFE) is an
interdisciplinary field spanning engineering, psychology, computer scienc
e, cognitive science, ergonomics, design, and related domains, making lite
rature identification and boundary definition challenging. Traditional dat
abase searches rely heavily on keyword strategies, yet keywords alone ofte
n fail to consistently capture disciplinary scope in fields with diffuse a
nd overlapping terminology. Therefore, keyword-based searches may retrieve
large volumes of adjacent literature while still missing core HFE work. T
o address this limitation, this study develops a journal set–based approac
h to define the HFE literature as part of an ongoing scoping review examin
ing evidence synthesis (e.g., systematic and scoping reviews) in HFE. Rath
er than operationalizing the field through keywords, this approach delinea
tes HFE based on its core publication venues. By leveraging established su
bject classification schemes and supplementary curated sources, the method
offers a transparent, systematic, and reproducible way to define discipli
nary boundaries, and improves the precision and consistency of literature
 retrieval in HFE.\n\n
