SUMMARY:RIDE Together: Investigating Persuasive Messaging Design to Foster
Prosocial Behavior to Improve Microtransit Systems
DESCRIPTION:Douglas Jonidis (North Carolina State University)\n\nThis stud
y investigated how psychologically informed persuasive messaging can encou
rage prosocial ride-sharing behaviors to improve microtransit system effic
iency in Wilson, North Carolina. Ten in-person focus groups with 74 microt
ransit users evaluated 36 in-app message prototypes designed to encourage
riders to either shift travel times or walk short distances to alternate p
ickup locations. Messages varied by persuasion principle (social proof, re
ciprocity, liking/similarity, commitment/consistency) and benefit framing
(individual, group, system, health/environmental). Participants rated thei
r likelihood of complying with each request and discussed their perception
s in moderated sessions. Results showed no significant effect of request t
ype, but persuasion principle and benefit framing significantly influenced
agreement ratings. Reciprocity and commitment/consistency messages outper
formed social proof and liking/similarity approaches, while messages empha
sizing benefits to another individual or the rideshare system were more ef
fective than group, health, or environmental framings. Qualitative finding
s highlighted the importance of transparency, flexibility, personalization
, and clear reasoning. Overall, a “pay it forward” reciprocity strategy em
erged as the most effective approach for promoting cooperative rider behav
 ior and improving microtransit efficiency.\n\n
