SUMMARY:Evaluating Latent Hazards in Ai-enabled Clinical Occupational and
Environmental Medicine: a Conceptual Systems-based Hazard Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Zaira Chaudhry, Avishek Choudhury, and Christopher McGlynn (We
st Virginia University)\n\nOccupational and environmental medicine (OEM) c
linicians operate at the intersection of clinical medicine and the legal s
ystem. The impact of the clinical decisions and determinations made by OEM
clinicians extends far beyond clinical outcomes. Therefore, the integrati
on of artificial intelligence clinical decision support systems (AI-CDSS)
for OEM-specific clinician tasks requires careful consideration of the dom
ain-specific potential harms that may arise from clinician use of this tec
hnology in OEM, as such hazards may not be readily apparent using conventi
onal AI safety and risk assessment frameworks for the general healthcare d
omain. This conceptual systems-based hazard analysis applies the System-Th
eoretic Process Analysis (STPA) framework to the use of AI in clinical OEM
, focusing on hazards related to tasks that are unique to OEM practice. Th
is analysis identified legal, regulatory, economic, and public safety haza
rds that must be addressed to ensure responsible and ethical integration o
 f AI in clinical OEM.\n\n
