SUMMARY:Accessibility, Challenges, and Opportunities in Daily In-Home Amaz
on Echo Use by Sighted and Visual Impaired Users
DESCRIPTION:Hyung Nam Kim and Vincent Ogunmwonyi (North Carolina A&T State
University)\n\nThis study examines in-home smart speaker use among indivi
duals with visual disabilities and sighted users, with attention to access
ibility and user experience. Seventy-nine participants used an Amazon Echo
for one week, followed by interviews. Participants with visual disabiliti
es reported that voice interaction supported independent, eyes-free access
, although speech recognition errors and privacy concerns limited reliabil
ity. Sighted participants emphasized challenges in information completenes
s, setup, and system integration. Findings indicate both shared and group-
specific limitations in accessibility and effectiveness, which suggest opp
ortunities to improve recognition accuracy, onboarding, and transparency t
o support more equitable smart speaker use.\n\n
