Ergonomics Standards: What the User Should Know about How Standards Bodies Produce Standards
DescriptionThe Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) oversees and contributes to a broad range of ergonomics and human factors standards activities, including standards developed within HFES (e.g., HFES 100 and HFES 400), as well as standards developed by other organizations such as American National Standards Institute (ANSI), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Ergonomics standards are essential to the human factors and ergonomics profession as they provide guidelines and promote best practices for a variety of end-users, thus assisting them in improving their productivity and wellbeing.
At previous HFES Annual Meetings, we have presented updates on standards projects in which HFES is involved. In contrast, the focus of this session will shift from project updates to providing an in-depth examination of the processes used by various standards developing organizations to develop ergonomics and human factors standards. The session will highlight how these processes are structured and how they may differ across organizations.
