Modular 3D-Printed Smartphone XR Goggle with Independent Tri-Axis Optical Adjustment
SessionWednesday Poster Session
DescriptionSmartphone-based extended reality (XR) systems provide an accessible and low-cost approach for immersive simulation and training, but many existing smartphone XR goggles offer limited adjustability to accommodate differences in user facial anatomy and visual alignment. This work presents a modular, fully 3D-printed smartphone XR goggle designed with independent mechanical adjustment of interpupillary distance, vertical optical alignment, and eye-to-display distance. The system also incorporates a compact modular fabrication strategy that simplifies printing and user assembly. Developer bench testing demonstrated adjustment ranges spanning documented adult anthropometric variability. A preliminary usability study with adult participants evaluated whether users could intuitively identify and operate the adjustment mechanisms without instruction. Participants successfully identified the intended mechanism in nearly all scenarios and accurately described its function, suggesting that the adjustment architecture was largely intuitive during first-time interaction. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of combining anthropometric adaptability, modular fabrication, and intuitive operation within a low-cost smartphone XR platform for future immersive simulation applications.
