Measuring the Impact of Virtual Reality Immersion versus Desktop Learning Modalities

DescriptionHuman factors and education studies alike are increasingly exploring the use of VR technologies, yet evidence about their effectiveness for usability and learning remains inconclusive. To fill this gap, we measure the impact of an immersive virtual reality experience as it compares to a comparable desktop experience, both of which our team designed to educate about the process of Advanced Water Purification (AWP). By modeling cognitive load as a mediating mechanism and testing moderation effects of scaffolding (pre-training) and generative learning (learning by teaching), this study shows how targeted supports mitigate overload and foster deeper processing and durable outcomes. It also extends cognitive load theory to narrative-based VR environments, where storytelling coherence may shape attention, engagement, and cognitive effort. Our results help educators and policymakers adopt VR technologies guided by evidence rather than novelty, promoting stronger STEM preparation and deeper connections between classroom learning and real-world environmental challenges.
