What Scientists Say Makes Interdisciplinary Teams Work (and What Gets in the Way)

DescriptionLarge-scale interdisciplinary research programs involve substantial investments of people and funding, but the research community still has limited \evidence on how scientists themselves understand collaboration in these settings. Prior work in the science of team science emphasizes that effective interdisciplinary collaboration depends on how teams coordinate and make sense of each other’s work under real constraints. This study examines how researchers in large, multi-institution initiatives describe the interaction and behaviors that matter most for project success, how they believe interdisciplinarity helps and hinders research outcomes, and what strategies they report for managing cross-disciplinary work in practice.
