Understanding User Expectations Across Communication Modalities in Human-Robot Interaction: An Elicitation Study
DescriptionAs robots become increasingly common across workplaces and public-facing settings, effective human-robot communication is becoming more important. For such communication to be effective, however, robot signaling must also be predictable and aligned with users’ expectations. Although prior research has examined the effectiveness of specific communicative cues, much less attention has been given to the cues people actually expect robots to use. Understanding these expectations may therefore help support more intuitive, interpretable, and effective human-robot interaction. 43 participants were recruited to an online survey where their expectations for how various robots would communicate certain behaviors across a variety of scenarios was elicited. Findings showed that auditory and visual cues were the most expected form of communication. Trends in responses indicate its plausible that behavior is a stronger driver of individuals' expectations compared to robot morphology. At the level of specific cues across visual, auditory, and tactile channels, expectations were more variable and did not show a consistent pattern, making it difficult to infer whether behavior or morphology more strongly shaped these expectations. The present work highlights interesting trends in individuals' expectations for human robot communication but future work should take an experimental approach to verify these findings.
