Spot the Bot: Generating and Evaluating Realistic Synthetic Transcripts for Qualitative Research Training

DescriptionThis presentation explores a novel approach to creating realistic synthetic focus group transcripts using generative AI to support qualitative research training and methodological development. We will introduce a structured framework for generating and evaluating AI-generated qualitative data while addressing important concerns related to privacy, security, and responsible AI use. By combining public-source material, prompt engineering, and a practical assessment rubric, this work examines how synthetic datasets may help researchers and educators develop and test qualitative analysis approaches when real-world data cannot be accessed or shared.
