Perception in Passthrough: Evaluating Acuity, Contrast, and Color Perception on the Meta Quest 3

DescriptionAugmented reality (AR) technologies combine the physical environment with digital information in real time. Many AR head-worn displays (HWDs) (e.g., Meta Quest 3, Apple Vision Pro) utilize a technology called passthrough which uses external cameras to capture the real-world environment and present it on internal displays in the HWD. With the use of AR in industry settings expanding in recent years, understanding its impact on perception is critical for effective implementation. This study expands upon past research by investigating the impact of AR passthrough on visual perception, including visual acuity, visual contrast, and color perception with the commercially available Meta Quest 3 extended reality HWD. Ten college students (M = 20.30 years, SD = 2.11) with normal or corrected-to-normal vision (i.e., 20/20) completed three visual tasks with and without the HWD. Results revealed that visual acuity (p < .001) and visual contrast (p < .001) were reduced with the HWD. There was no difference in color discrimination performance, but many participants reported that colors appeared “muted”, “grainy”, or “digitized” with passthrough, and expressed greater difficulty distinguishing greens and blues. Future work should evaluate additional passthrough devices or include participants with wider age ranges, differing visual acuity, or color deficiencies.
