Comparative analysis of Alert modalities and directional effect on driver reaction and hazard anticipation
DescriptionAdvanced Driver Assistive Systems (ADAS) aims to enhance safety and improve driving comfort by assisting drivers navigate by providing time-critical alerts and navigational supports as a driver progress through the traffic. However, driver distraction and lack of trust still remains a major concern in modern transportation system. More than 50% of the vehicles produced in 2024 come with at least ten ADAS alert features. However, a 2020 survey revealed that over 20% of drivers disabled their safety alerts, citing “annoyance” and “distraction” as the major reasons. Moving forward, it remains crucial that the effectiveness and usability of these features be evaluated such that it serves it’s intended purpose and that drivers accept these features as a part of their vehicle interaction. And it’s equally important that these systems remain non-intrusive and ensure information delivery without causing any information overload to the drivers. Thus, in this study, we evaluate the effectiveness of alert modalities across visual, haptic, and auditory alerts presented over directional hazards to answer whether alerts improve driver engagement and reaction, whether there are directional correlations associated with the alerts and hazards, and whether there individual level differences to explore the need for personalized alert systems.
