Measuring Visual Attention Across Concurrent and Sequential Visual Perception Tasks

DescriptionUnderstanding visual attention is essential for interpreting how people interact with visual information and how attentional demands vary across tasks. This study examines how oculometric measures reflect differences in visual attention across tasks that engage global, selective, and sustained visual attention. Seven participants (aged 19–36; four females and three males) were recruited and asked to complete three types of tasks: describing images (global attention), identifying differences in side-by-side images (selective attention), and comparing images presented sequentially (sustained attention). Eye tracking was used to record task duration, fixation count, fixation percentage, blink count, blink percentage, and pupil diameter.
The results show that fixation count is a particularly sensitive oculometric measure for distinguishing between different types of visual attention tasks. Overall, this preliminary study suggests that fixation-based metrics are most effective in detecting task-dependent differences in visual attention under controlled, low-demand conditions, whereas other oculometric measures may require more complex experimental paradigms to reveal meaningful distinctions.
