Ergonomic Assessments and Intervention Implementation: An ENT Surgeons Case Study
DescriptionIntroduction: Ear, nose, and throat surgeons often perform many cases daily requiring sustained postures while wearing head lights or loupes. This type of work could lead to long term work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). The two key aims of this case study were: 1) perform an observational evaluation of ENT surgeon workload, and 2) offer ergonomic support through workflow changes, education, and personal protective equipment implementation. Approach: Three trained ergonomists observed the workflow of three ENT surgeons from a tertiary academic hospital. Awkward postures were identified intraoperatively. Surgeons were also introduced to surgical microbreaks and OR-Stretch. Lastly, surgeons were introduced to personal protective equipment – namely passive exoskeletons. The effectiveness of the exoskeletons was evaluated through interviews and surveys. Outcomes: Workflow intervention was able to improve surgeons’ neck postures. One surgeon completed post-operative surveys indicating that when using an intraoperative exoskeleton, body part discomfort decreased. However, during interviews, aesthetic issues relating to the exoskeletons were highlighted. Conclusion: In an exploratory case study collaborating with ENT surgeons, workflow issues were identified, and ergonomic interventions were introduced successfully reducing surgeon discomfort.
