A Scoping Review on Rehabilitation Systems Adopting Artificial Intelligence to Boost Motivation

DescriptionPhysical rehabilitation is a primary means by which patients recover from physical injury and restore functional independence. Traditionally, rehabilitation has taken place in clinical settings; however, various social and structural determinants of health, such as living conditions, income levels, and the physical environment, can influence a patient’s ability to access in-person rehabilitation services. These barriers underscore the importance of developing effective telerehabilitation solutions. Telerehabilitation offers several advantages over traditional in-clinic rehabilitation: it reduces geographical and transportation barriers, allows patients to receive therapy at home, and enables continuous monitoring and support outside clinical environments. Nonetheless, remote rehabilitation can make it challenging to maintain patient engagement and motivation. The absence of in-person supervision and direct oversight may lead to reduced adherence and inconsistent participation in prescribed exercises. Maintaining patient motivation and engagement is therefore critical to the success of self-directed rehabilitation programs. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have opened promising avenues for the development of adaptive and personalized digital rehabilitation solutions. This scoping review examines current developments in AI-driven rehabilitation systems and highlights emerging trends and challenges, with a particular focus on the techniques employed, evaluation methods used, and user experiences reported across studies.
