The Development of an Online Exoskeleton Training Program for Construction Safety Trainers.
DescriptionConstruction work involves numerous repetitive movements performed in non-neutral positions, affecting mainly the shoulders and back. This contributes to high incidences of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) within the construction industry. Research using surface electromyography (sEMG) has found that passive support exoskeletons (PSEs) reduce muscle activity, potentially reducing fatigue (van Sluijs et al., 2023). However, the successful implementation of PSEs is hindered by several barriers. For instance, although the high workload of construction tasks increases the potential impact of PSEs on construction workers, the variability in construction tasks and environments presents implementation challenges. Furthermore, adjusting PSEs to fit workers properly and provide the appropriate level of support for the task being performed is challenging and currently requires a trained professional. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop an Online PSE User Guide for Construction Safety Professionals and evaluate its learnability, usability, and mental load at each iterative development stage.
