Assessing physical workload in janitorial tasks using the Janitors’ Workload Calculator: A case study from a California conference center
SessionWednesday Poster Session
DescriptionJanitorial work is labor-intensive and exposes workers to high rates of repetitive movements and exertion of high physical forces. The Janitors Workload Calculator (JWC) was developed to assess MSD risk and assist in planning janitorial tasks to reduce overall workload and MSD risk . However, it was developed based on janitorial work in large commercial office buildings, limiting its generalizability to janitorial work in other settings (i.e., different venues other than commercial office buildings). The aim of this study was to explore the implementation of the JWC for janitorial work in a conference center in the California Janitor Workload Study (CJWS) by comparing the estimated risk from the JWC with the actual risk quantified in the CJWS. Overall, for the six participants and nine tasks evaluated in this case study, the estimated MSD risk from the JWC were highly consistent with the directly measured MSD risk from the CJWS. More work is needed to expand the JWC dataset so it can be used to support safe janitorial task scheduling in various venues to keep workloads at a safe level.
