How to Recognize Your Pachyderm in a Hurry: Morphological Trait Diagnosticity for the Identification of Adult Asian Elephants

DescriptionIdentifying and tracking individual elephants is a key aspect of elephant conservation and the mitigation of human-elephant conflict. Using camera trap footage collected in Thailand, Montero-De La Torre et al. (2023) coded a sample of 72 adult Asian elephants for 24 morphological traits. They reported that these traits could be used by expert coders to identify individual adult elephants with minimal error. To better assess trait diagnosticity, we performed a secondary analysis of Montero-De La Torre et al.'s data, calculating the entropy (H), or average information content, of each trait. To quantify the efficiency of identification based on H, we performed a Monte Carlo simulation to estimate the number of trait checks required to identify an individual elephant.
Results indicated clear differences in diagnosticity between traits, with body depigmentation and characteristics of ear shape being the most useful for identification. Monte Carlo simulations confirmed that inspecting traits in order of entropy values, from highest to lowest, allowed rapid identification of individual elephants and protected against misidentification if individual traits were miscoded. Results suggest that an information-theoretic measure of diagnosticity can be useful to guide the design of training protocols for identification of Asian elephants.
