Anthropomorphism and Artificial Intelligence: Common Themes and Contradictions

DescriptionArtificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly advancing technology often described as mimicking human cognition. Despite its benefits, AI raises concerns, including persistent bias, increasing incidents, and widespread public skepticism about its overall impact. As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, understanding human-AI interaction is critical, particularly whether perceiving AI as humanlike helps or hinders these interactions. Anthropomorphism refers to attributing human characteristics, intentions, or emotions to nonhuman entities. Some researchers argue that anthropomorphizing AI fosters empathy, trust, and usability, improving interactions. Others contend it is misleading, causing users to overestimate AI’s capabilities and misunderstand its limitations. This study conducts a semi-structured literature review of 95 articles from major academic databases, categorizing them as viewing anthropomorphism as beneficial or detrimental. Preliminary findings show mixed results: anthropomorphism may increase trust and likability in some contexts but has inconsistent effects on performance and attitudes. Overall, the research highlights conflicting evidence and emphasizes the need for a clearer theoretical framework. Understanding anthropomorphism’s role is essential for designing effective and responsible AI systems as their societal influence grows.
