Human Factors of Flight Crew Communication and Performance: Influencing Factors and AI Opportunities

DescriptionHuman error and team communication breakdowns remain major contributors to aviation accidents whilst substantial technological advances in aircraft systems (Flin et al, 2002). Within the flight deck, effective communication is central to situational awareness, task coordination, decision-making support, and error escalation prevention; however flight crews operate in high-workload, time-pressured environments where communication is hindered by factors such as stress, fatigue, and automation demands.
The objective of this work is to synthesize and evaluate human factors research examining (1) common commercial flight crew errors, (2) communication modalities and failures in the cockpit, (3) the role of stress in shaping communication and performance, and (4) explore the roles AI can play within the flight deck.
