The Role of Technology Based Interventions in addressing stressors contributing to the experience of Loneliness and Social Isolation in Older Adults
DescriptionThe experience of loneliness and social isolation impacts 1 in 3 older adults in the United States, making it a significant public health concern. These experiences have implications across all areas of wellbeing, impacting physical, mental, and cognitive health. Considering the rapid growth of the number of older adults entering older adulthood, estimated to increase from 13.1% of the total population in 2010 to roughly 21.5% by 2050 in the United States alone, the lack of access to programs and services capable of meeting the social needs further exacerbates the potential implications of loneliness and social isolation. The evolution of digital communication technologies (e.g., video-chat, social media, social robots, virtual reality) are presenting new opportunities in expanding access to resources that may help mend the access to social resources that are able to address the diverse set of stressors associated with the experience of loneliness and social isolation.
Our systematic review included papers that tested interventions targeted at addressing the experience of loneliness and social isolation.
