Do Drivers Incorporate Vehicle Dynamics When Estimating Time Required to Turn in a Driving Simulator?
DescriptionDeciding whether it is safe to turn left in front of an oncoming vehicle relies on a driver’s ability to accurately estimate the oncoming vehicles' time-to-collision and their own time required to turn (TRT). A previous driving simulator experiment that investigated the accuracy of TRT judgments found that people underestimated how long it took them to turn. A potential limitation of this study is that participants may have used vehicle dynamics from a personal vehicle to estimate TRT rather than using the vehicle dynamics from the driving simulator. The current study manipulated the vehicle dynamics depicted in the driving simulator to determine if participants based their TRT estimates on the vehicle they drove. Participants completed two separate conditions: one in which the vehicle dynamics resembled a sports car and one in which the vehicle dynamics resembled a truck. Results indicated that people based their turn estimations on the vehicle dynamics depicted in the driving simulator, and that people underestimated the amount of time it took them to turn. The current study validates that previously reported TRT underestimations were based on the vehicle dynamics depicted in the driving simulator rather than the participant's own vehicle.
