Design for Human Variability: Reflections from the HFES Council of Affinity Groups (COAG)

DescriptionWithin HFES, Affinity Groups have been established to foster connection, mutual support, and dialogue among members who share experiences related to gender, chronic health conditions, cultural or national background, race and ethnicity, and sexual orientation or gender identity. Collectively represented through the Council of Affinity Groups (COAG), these communities include groups focused on women (HFE WOMAN), individuals with chronic diseases or disabilities (Disability/Chronic Illness), individuals of Korean heritage (K-HFES), Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, gender non-conforming and their allies (LGBTQ+). While the goals of these groups align with long-standing HF/E principles of human-centered design and respect for individual differences, broader social and institutional conversations surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion have become increasingly complex and, at times, unfoundedly contested. This panel aims to provide tools and information for AG and HFES members, as well as all attendees, to articulate the positive impact that affinity-based initiatives create for HFES members and beyond in their personal, academic, and professional lives. Our goal for this panel will foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere within HFES and, in doing so, support collegiality and collaboration across the society.
