One Question for Human-Machine Teaming: Supporting Rapid Technology Vetting in AI and Autonomy Acquisition
DescriptionWith the rapid advancement of AI technologies and the Department of Defense (DoD’s) pivot towards commercial solutions, acquisition stakeholders face mounting pressure to accelerate procurement of increasingly complex technologies while ensuring technology solutions are operationally ready for Warfighters. Operational readiness for Warfighters includes AI technologies having effective Human-Machine Teaming (HMT) design and development maturity. The shift to commercial solution acquisition is giving rise to new types of decision-making paradigms for acquisition representatives. Our panel considers a scenario in which an acquisition representative must quickly understand AI technologies’ technical qualities including HMT by interviewing vendors. Due to time constraints and the broad set of technical qualities of interest, the acquisition representative can only afford to ask one question pertaining to HMT. Success in providing this one interview question to probe for HMT qualities may be the difference in downstream prioritization of HMT for acquisition and ultimately support to Warfighters. This panel will bring expert perspectives to bear to explore questions that can be leveraged by external audiences to make more informed decisions regarding AI-system’s support for HMT. These questions will also help make AI-infused technology decisions in all other settings, where the pace and uncertainty can be just as daunting.
