Risky (Human Factors) Business: Lessons learned from consulting on risk management and how to effectively communicate risk across human factors applications
DescriptionRisk management and risk communication are inherent components of human factors (HF) work. HF professionals must confront how human capabilities and limitations impact the safe and effective use of devices and medications and their role in attaining an informed balance between the potential for harm and benefit. Notably, effective risk management and communication depend on systemic elements including the audience, the product, and the environment. For instance, communications regarding an in-clinic dialysis system for use by physicians and patients will be different to how risk is communicated for a kitchen appliance designed for home use.

We have assembled panelists with backgrounds in usability testing, hazard analysis, and risk communication. They represent decades of experience with designing and evaluating products and systems across a wide range of applications. The panelists have experience employing human factors methods for managing risk during the earlier stages of product development in addition to addressing risk concerns once products have been released and risks are realized. The discussion will speak to psychological and institutional contributions to effective risk management and risk communication, drawing from both manufacturer and researcher perspectives and taking into account regulator capabilities and limitations.
