Shaping Future Automated School Bus Systems: Multi-Stakeholder Insights Informing Human-in-the-Loop Design
DescriptionAlthough automation has been widely studied in private vehicles and public transit, the design of automated school buses has received limited attention. Little is known about how to address the concerns of adolescents, parents, and school bus drivers or how to translate them into interaction design. To fill these gaps, we conducted interviews and co-design workshops with multi-stakeholders. Based on concerns about current school buses and acceptance of automation revealed in the interview, we co-designed human-in-the-loop systems reflecting the participants' view that high automation is acceptable only under human supervision. We proposed age-appropriate interaction principles with minimized adult-delivered messages when necessary. We also designed guardian interfaces that adapt across routine and emergency scenarios, with onboard systems coordinating cross-device tasks and remote systems enabling direct control and assistance in collaboration with onboard guardians. These designs move beyond conventional paradigms by embedding scenario-adaptive, multi-role collaboration mechanisms tailored to the school transportation.
