Sensor-Based Measures Predict Nontechnical Skill Scores of Robotic-Assisted Surgery Team Members

DescriptionSurgical teams rely not only on technical skills, but also on cognitive and interpersonal skills, often collectively referred to as nontechnical skills (NTS). These skills are critical to patient safety, yet current methods of evaluation depend heavily on observable actions, which can be influenced by observation bias and subjectivity. Using wearable sensors (eye-tracking and location trackers) provides an opportunity to objectively measure and assess NTS in the operating room. The data collected from these sensors, along with communication patterns derived from audio recordings, were analyzed to predict standardized NTS ratings assigned by expert observers. Preliminary findings during robotic hernia repair surgeries demonstrate that wearable sensor data can capture meaningful signals about team NTS that go beyond scores from standard assessments. With further development, this approach could enable objective assessment of surgical team performance, creating a pathway to better understand how NTS influences patient outcomes.
