From Attention to Action: Attention Dynamics as a Mechanism for Adaptive Decision Support in C5ISR
DescriptionToday’s military C5ISR task environment is increasingly saturated with sensor data. The unprecedented volume of data leaves Mission Commanders (MCs) vulnerable, as their limited information-processing capabilities may be outpaced by the speed of information flow. Hence, the need for an aid to guide human attention is greater than ever. Building on a previous study, researchers examined the impact of a multimodal versus a visual-only adaptive decision support tool (DST) on MC performance in a supervisory control environment. Given that human behavior and physiological data often follow nonlinear patterns, a nonlinear dynamical systems analysis method, recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), was chosen to examine the relationship between participants' eye-tracking data and their performance. A stepwise regression with BIC identified a parsimonious model that explained a substantial portion of the variance in the performance score. Performance was significantly higher in the multimodal condition than in the visual-only condition. Additionally, several other RQA metrics exhibited both linear and nonlinear (inverted-U) relationships with performance. These results indicate an optimal zone in which moderate structure in attentional dynamics maximized performance, while both under- and over-structured gaze behaviors were detrimental.
