Evolving Human Trust Dynamics with Automated Systems: A Scoping Review
DescriptionEffective human-autonomy teaming (HAT) depends on users appropriately calibrating their trust and reliance on automated systems (ASs). Poorly calibrated trust can result in errors, reduced efficiency, and degraded performance. This scoping review takes a structured approach to synthesize literature on the dynamics of human trust and reliance on ASs and their impact on performance. Following the Arksey and O'Malley (2005) framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a search of four databases (Scopus, PubMed, IEEE, PsycInfo) yielded 12,818 publications, with 53 meeting inclusion criteria. Findings reveal an evolution in human-AS interaction modalities and a range of participant roles: supervisor, collaborator, and information receiver. Considerable variability was identified in trust measurement tools, with many studies using modified or self-made questionnaires without sufficient reporting detail. This review highlights critical gaps in AS transparency and methodological standardization. Future research should focus on the addition of reporting AS accuracy to participants, specifying trust measure adaptations, and considering trust alongside complementary outcomes such as reliance, workload, and situational awareness to build a more complete understanding of trust dynamics.
