Drivers’ Perceptions, Understanding, and Real-World Use of Regenerative Braking and One Pedal Driving in Electric Vehicles
DescriptionAs electric vehicles (EVs) become more commonplace, increasing numbers of drivers are being exposed to regenerative braking (RB), a process where the EV’s electric motor regenerates energy through decelerating when the accelerator pedal is released. Newer EVs incorporate specific “one-pedal driving” (OPD) modes allowing drivers to control vehicle speed with only the accelerator pedal. We surveyed 514 American EV drivers online to understand their perception, knowledge, and use of RB and OPD. The majority of EV drivers had RB (76%) or OPD (68%) capabilities in their EV, and 42% and 41% of those who reported using RB or OPD reported using it “always”. However, drivers did not rely on RB/OPD in all situations, with 57% reporting they used the service brake at least 3 times per driving session. EV drivers reported positive feelings towards RB and OPD, rating both as enjoyable and reliable; reliability ratings were positively correlated with experience using a given feature. However, knowledge regarding factors that affect the operation of RB and OPD was low in the sample. Consumer sentiment towards RB and OPD appears positive, however, knowledge of the systems is relatively low, and drivers do not rely solely on RB to control vehicle speed.
