Tangible User Interfaces Impacts on Cognitive Workload and Immersion: A Literature Review
DescriptionAs advances are made in immersive, interactive technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), there has been growing interest in exploring how users interface with these systems. Many modern VR systems include handheld controllers for guiding system interactions, and prior to these developments it was common to use gaming controllers and joysticks to interact with virtual environments. In addition to these commonplace input devices, an interesting avenue to investigate is the integration of tangible user interfaces (TUIs). This review analyzed recent literature with a goal of identifying studies that give insight on the impact of TUI use on cognitive load and sense of perceived immersion. Findings indicate that TUI use is associated with a reduction of cognitive load in some cases, but there is a significant research gap remaining. Similar conclusions were drawn regarding immersion. There is evidence to suggest future research regarding the intersections of these topics could be worthwhile.
