Decision Time Constraints and Trust Propagation in Multi-Human, Multi-Autonomy Teaming
DescriptionModern human-autonomy teams often operate under time constraints that limit individuals' ability to fully evaluate automated recommendations. In these settings, people may rely not only on their own interactions with automation, but also on cues from their teammates. This study examines how decision time constraints influences trust propagation in multi-human, multi-autonomy teams.
Participants worked in pairs with two drones in a repeated threat-detection task, making rapid decisions under either standard (3.0 sec) or constraint (1.7 sec) time conditions. After each round, participants reported their trust in both drones and their teammate. This design allowed us to measure how trust in one agent shifts based on a teammate's reported trust.
Results show that trust propagates between teammates in both conditions, but decision time constraints strengthen this effect. Under limited time, participants rely more on their teammate's trust when updating their own beliefs and show increasing trust in their teammate over time. These findings highlight the importance of social influences on trust in time-constrained environments and have implications for the design of human-autonomy systems that support effective team decision-making under pressure.
