Impact of Simulated Flight Environments on Risk Perception
DescriptionOur current research capabilities in the fields of aviation and human performance typically result in experiments conducted in flight simulators, where we collect baseline information on how humans perform in various conditions or after training interventions. While increased fidelity and improved immersiveness have helped make these devices sufficiently realistic to be used for training, pilots inherently change their behavior when operating in a simulated environment compared to flying a real aircraft due to variations in stress. This paper investigates how humans perform and behave based on their perceived environment, i.e. whether the flight is simulated or in a real vehicle. We specifically study risk perception and workload using both subjective scales and physiological sensors while pilots are flying a simulated Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in a virtual reality simulator. A control group flew a simulated task three times—the experimental group was deceived into thinking they were flying the real vehicle on the second repetition of the task. This paper discusses changes in their behavioral response as well as performance differences between the two groups.
