Examining Multi-Team System Attributes Through the Lens of Aviation Accident Data from the National Transportation Safety Board
DescriptionResearch has been conducted for decades to examine the contributing factors of aviation accidents using a variety of human error methods and taxonomies. For example, popular human error frameworks such as the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) have been used to report on trends in the industry (Shappell et al., 2007; Vempati et al., 2023). The results of these analyses often provide the frequency of contributing factors obtained from an examination of reports from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). For example, HFACS analyses can provide insights into the frequency of factors like decision errors, inadequate supervision, and teamwork-related errors, among other categories (Wiegmann & Shappell, 2023). In addition, research can be conducted to provide more specific, detailed insights into these categories. For instance, examining errors classified in HFACS analyses as teamwork-related (i.e., using the “communication, coordination, and planning” category of the HFACS; Wiegmann & Shappell, 2023) from the lens of foundational team science theory can provide increased awareness into teamwork-specific trends in the industry. This additional analysis can be beneficial when aiming to more deeply understand the complexities of such a safety-critical domain.
