A Conceptual Framework Outlining the Teamwork Competencies Needed for Multi-Team Systems Operating in Extreme Environments
DescriptionNearly everyone recognizes the classic quote, “Houston, we’ve had a problem” spoken by the Apollo 13 astronauts after a damaged oxygen tank put their lives at risk (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, 1970). However, far less attention has been given to the teamwork between astronauts and mission control during this complication, which was essential in preventing disaster (Iddy & Zakayo, 2024). The importance of teamwork extends beyond the space industry to other safety-critical domains such as aviation, healthcare, and the military. These teams operate in what is known as an extreme environment, or an environment in which conditions are unusual in level (e.g., time sensitive) or kind (e.g., danger, isolation); these environments require effective teamwork to avoid severe consequences for the team itself or their clients (e.g., airline passengers; Bell et al., 2018; Vessey & Landon, 2017). Despite their challenges and environmental demands, these environments necessitate teamwork between all team members to ensure safety and promote team effectiveness.
