Impacts of Non-Driving Related Task and Takeover Request Failure on Takeover Performance and Workload in Level 3 Automated Driving Scenarios
DescriptionAutomated vehicles have the potential to improve roadway safety, but some systems still require drivers to take control when needed. This study examined how distractions, such as texting or phone calls, and the presence or absence of a takeover alert affect driver performance in Level 3 automated vehicles.
Using a driving simulator, participants completed multiple scenarios where the vehicle requested driver intervention under different conditions. Researchers measured crash rates and perceived workload to understand how drivers respond.
The results showed that takeover alerts significantly reduced crash rates, highlighting the importance of clear warning systems. Distractions increased drivers’ perceived workload but did not consistently increase crashes. In some cases, engaging in certain tasks, such as phone conversations, slightly improved performance, likely by keeping drivers more mentally engaged.
Overall, the findings suggest that well-designed alert systems are critical for safe vehicle operation, and that not all distractions have the same impact on driver readiness. These insights can help inform the design of future automated driving systems and safety guidelines.
