Application of the Big Five of Teamwork to Explain Variance in Team Process and Objective Team Performance in a Simulated Submarine Control Room

DescriptionWe tested whether the Big Five of Teamwork (B5T) can explain team processes and objective performance in a simulated submarine control room. The B5T comprises team leadership, team orientation, mutual performance monitoring, backup behaviour, adaptability, and three coordinating mechanisms: shared mental models, closed-loop communication, and mutual trust. Sixteen teams of five participants completed role-based training and four scenarios involving detection, classification, and tracking of maritime contacts. The B5T was operationalised using a new measure combining coded communication transcripts, questionnaire data, and objective performance (tactical picture error). Structural equation modelling showed that the full B5T model fit poorly. A reduced core B5T model excluding coordinating mechanism covariances provided adequate fit. However, neither model significantly predicted objective team performance. Team leadership positively predicted backup behaviour, a propositional pathway in the model, and Team leadership independently predicted objective performance. These findings suggest that the B5T model captured teamwork processes well but would require refinement to function as a predictive process model in submarine control room settings. Findings also support the driving role of leaders within teams. This study provides a novel empirical test of the full B5T model and highlights the need for clearer construct alignment and context-specific model development.
