SampleSavvy: A Web Tool for Guiding Research Sample Size Decisions

DescriptionDetermining an appropriate sample size is a critical yet often challenging step in designing research studies. Many researchers rely on statistical power analysis tools such as G*Power, but these tools can be difficult to use, especially for those without extensive statistical training. To address this issue, we developed SampleSavvy, a web-based tool designed to guide users through the process of selecting appropriate parameters and understanding their impact on sample size decisions. SampleSavvy provides an interactive, step-by-step interface that helps users specify key inputs, including effect size (Cohen’s d), alpha (p-value), and power level (1 - Beta). By combining guided instructions with adjustable controls, this tool allows users to explore how different choices influence recommended sample sizes in real time. To evaluate its usability, we conducted a think-aloud study with seven participants with varying levels of experience with power analysis tools. Results suggest that participants generally found SampleSavvy more intuitive and user-friendly than G*Power, highlighting its structured workflow and clarity. Feedback also revealed opportunities for future improvement, including implementing more test options and flexible input choices. Overall, SampleSavvy demonstrates the potential of user-centered design to make complex statistical processes more accessible and support better research planning.
