One Person’s Trash, Another’s Treasure: Initial Interface Usability Evaluation of Data and Information Presentation during the Needs Assessment Phase for a Continuous Melatonin Monitor
DescriptionMelatonin is a hormone that acts as a strong biomarker for the circadian rhythm, or the body’s internal clock. However, despite the cognitive, emotional, and health impacts of poor sleep caused by a mismatch between circadian rhythm timing and activity and sleep schedules, current melatonin assessment techniques are invasive, time-consuming, and expensive. A wearable continuous melatonin monitor would address some of these issues while raising new challenges around presenting melatonin data to non-sleep expert users. This study seeks to identify effective and preferred data presentations that support users in interpreting melatonin data to identify circadian misalignment, predict when they will be ready for bed, explore relationships between the circadian rhythm and self-care activities, and understand circadian misalignment’s relationship with chronic condition symptoms. Twenty participants were recruited to participate in an initial 90-minute interview session where they were asked to interpret data shown on different static wireframes, provide their feedback, and identify their preferred data presentations. Results were mixed, with few data presentations performing significantly better than others, and reported preferences varying widely across individuals. This suggests that future wireframes should integrate multiple different data presentations to resonate with a broader user base than any one presentation would allow.
