Mobility Interaction Simulator: A Scalable Experimental Research Platform for Mobility Research
DescriptionMobility research has traditionally relied on in-person driving simulators to examine driver behavior and performance. While highly effective, simulator-based studies demand substantial logistical resources and can be hindered by scalability. These constraints become increasingly significant as mobility research expands beyond conventional human-vehicle interactions to encompass emerging domains such as novel transportation systems, driver-automation
interactions, and AI-enabled vehicles operating in shared spaces. This paper introduces Mobility Interaction Simulator, a mobility-focused scenario testbed designed to support rigorous human-machine interaction research within scalable, interactive environments. Our approach bridges the needs of mobility researchers and practitioners with established methodologies from behavioral and psychological research, leveraging online data collection. This can enable users to develop novel studies of driver interactions with automation and other road users, apply and evaluate psychological constructs, with the capacity to scale and further validate for in-person driving simulator user studies.
